Mindset: how to reach your full potential
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts and TEDx Talks on my way to work. I’ve heard and read things about mindsets by Commander Mark Divine in his Unbeatable Mind podcast, from Jocko Willink and Leif Babin in their book Extreme Ownership, and Captain Tom Chaby in his TEDx Talk.
In my most recent commute, I listened to a TEDx Talk called The Power of Belief- Mindset and Success by Eduardo Briceno, and I was blown away by what he was saying. This subject has been incredibly fascinating so I decided to dig deeper into it.After some more research, here’s what I’ve found…
Fixed Mindset. In a fixed mindset, people believe basic qualities, intelligence and talent, are fixed traits. They tend to believe that success is a result of talent alone, as opposed to hard work. People with a fixed mindset tend to spend more time documenting their intelligence, rather than developing it. They are less likely to accept feedback and embrace challenges. They feel less inspired and more threatened by the success of others, showing a lack of self-confidence and motivation to learn new things.
Growth Mindset. People with a growth mindset believe that basic qualities can be developed and improved through dedication and hard work- intelligence and talent are just the starting point. This perspective creates a desire for learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.Studies show that people with growth mindsets, because they believe effort will make them stronger, are more motivated in their endeavors and more resilient in their failures. Those with this mindset have shown enhanced productivity, self-esteem and relationships. Teaching and developing a growth mindset enables people to reach their full potential.
Those who believe their abilities are malleable are more likely to embrace challenges and persist despite failure (Dweck 1988).
How to develop a Growth Mindset. Knowing you can reach your full potential by developing a growth mindset, here are eight ways you can start to change yours now.
Acknowledge and embrace imperfections; hiding from your weaknesses won’t help you overcome them.
View challenges as opportunities
Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning”
Celebrate the growth of others
Value the process over the end result
Stop seeking approval
Take risks in the company of others
Take ownership over your attitude
